Lid of the painted anthropoid coffin of  Horj
21a Theban Dynasty ca. 1000 BCE
Provenance certainly Thebes
Wood covered with gesso and painted; significant  relief painting
National Museum of Tatarstan, Kazan
First pictorial publication

This very badly damaged lid is an example of the finest work of the 21a Theban Dynasty of the High Priests of
Amun. It was thought to be lost, until identified by a team of the Centre for Egyptological Studies of the
Russian Academy of Sciences (Galina A. Belova, Alexej A. Krol, Edward R. Loring) in June, 1998. It is hoped
that sponsorship for the restoration of this valuable historical document will be found. We believe that the
images published here will show sufficient reason for its preservation.

On this page we are showing an edited mosaic of photographs made under difficult conditions by Alexej A.
Krol and digitally edited by Edward R. Loring.

A description of the decoration will be published at a later date.

Principle composition: at left
"as-is"; above after digital
processing which may have
altered the original colours.

Note the ram-headed scarab
shown in more detail below.
Above: the ram-headed scarab has been personified through the
addition of a human hand grasping a flail.

Left: as could be expected, a serpent element of the
Atef crown
on the ram's head is itself crowned with the double feathers of
Amun.
