| The Odessa State Museum of Archaeology of the National Sciences Academy of Ukraine houses one of the most interesting collections of Ancient Egyptian artifacts in Eastern Europe. The collection of anthropoid coffins is worthy of particular consideration. The principle attraction is the outer coffin of the Songstress of Amun, Nesjtaudjatakhet, who lived in Thebes during the 21a Theban Dynasty, the period between 1070 and 945 BCE subsequent to the disintegration of the New Kingdom. At this time, Upper Egypt was ruled by a family of High Priests of Amun. The museum possesses several of these coffins which were presented to Tsar Alexander III in 1893 by the Khedive of Egypt. The collection was completely neglected during the Soviet Period and many priceless objects are urgently in need of restoration and conservation. It is hoped that this online presentation will stimulate public interest in the collection and its preservation. This site has been compiled as a result of a survey of Ancient Egyptian collections in the museums of the former Soviet Union, a research project of the Centre for Egyptological Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the direction of Dr. Galina A. Belova. The photographs were made by Dr. Sergej V. Ivanov and the site was created by Edward R. Loring. We believe that this material will be of scientific value for professional egyptologists and of interest to all those interested in Ancient Egyptian art and culture. Click here for information concerning the use of images presented on this site. The site will be updated and enlarged as our research progresses. We hope that you will enjoy your viewing ...and think about a visit to the beautiful, historic, friendly city of Odessa! el/25.02.06 |
