The chief criterion for classifying artifacts is their function or way of use. Additionally, the material a thing is made of or the technique by which it was manufactured may serve as criteria also. Types and sub-types of objects are attributed, on the highest level of classification, to the main material domains of life in antiquity. The 19 domains suggested in the present lexicon follow quite closely the classification underlying the online-database of the complete collections of the National Museum of Ethnology (Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde) at Leiden NL, where a hierarchical thesaurus of terms is implemented for search (www.rmv.nl). The terminology and classification of the Leiden Museum goes back to years of experimentation and experience of quite a number of ethnological museums uniting efforts on this field, in the nineteen-nineties.
The
following list of terms is generated directly by the relational database system
GALEXYS which contains hierarchically structured thesauri. The horizontal
strokes (___) at the beginning of a line indicate the hierarchical position of a
term. The shortest stroke indicates the highest level, every term depending on
the one who’s stroke is one point shorter. Terms with equal length of strokes
are on the same level. The alphabetical sorting system begins at new every time
the list “jumps back” to a shorter stroke, i.e. to a higher level of hierarchy.
Terms on
lower levels normally are descriptive, i.e. designating an actually existing
artifact (thing/object); terms on high levels are classificatory, i.e.
designating an abstract category of things (e.g. clothing, meaning all
concievable clothing articles together, while there is no real garment called
“clothing”.)
